When I first saw Dalton’s (you can call him MrJames) newest endeavor, Queer Cosmic Folk Art, my jaw dropped. I immediately thought- what a unique and vibrant voice he’s created for himself! A month or so later, Dalton asked me if I had suggestions on where he might be able to show his new video series, Creation. I shared a couple of ideas with him, but my mind never stopped churning over it.
My brain would not leave this Queer Cosmic Folk Art alone. I mean, really, “Queer Cosmic Folk Art???” How could I not be obsessed? Then I saw this post:
Caption: I made this painting because what’s happening is terrifying—not because I am weak, but because of the choices being made around me. If you love someone who is LGBTQIA—your family, your friends, anyone—now is the time to speak up. Share a word of support. Spread love louder than hate.
That’s when I knew that this work needed to get in front of people— and that I could make that happen. I was hoping to get a showing at one of the galleries in Eureka Springs, AR because the town is the perfect place for his work. When that fell through, something even better evolved...
The Billies Tour Eureka Springs
The fun begins on April 1 with "Meet the Billies", a multi-location exhibition during which seven different Billies will be hung in a place of esteem at seven different businesses in Eureka Springs. April is deemed a Diversity month in Eureka Springs- the first weekend being Diversity Weekend so it's perfect timing to introduce the Billies!
All pieces will be available for sale. Businesses showcasing the Billies include: Just Bee Coffee Bar, The Twisted Taco Downtown, So Good Kitchen, Bowsirs Pet Store, Three Bird Cafe, Eureka Vintage and Outdoor, and Harold's Diner Soda Fountain and FARMacy.
On May 1, the Billies will move to Harold's for a "Billies Reunion" where they will be featured during the White Street Art Studio Walk.
Then on June 1, the Billies travel to Just Bee Coffee Bar for the inauguration of the new mini-gallery that is being set up in the Roasterie.
We know that many, if not all, of the Billies, will find new homes before the end of the tour. Never fear! Other beautiful Billies are waiting in the wings to make their way to Eureka Springs and take their place!
What’s a Billy?
Mr. James' Queer Cosmic Folk Art invites viewers into a vibrant world where the Billies—identical yet distinct characters—navigate life’s eternal questions through the innocence of their comic strip adventures. These playful explorations into identity and existence unfold in a universe that blends the naive honesty of folk art with the vibrant impact of pop art, creating a unique genre that resonates with the joys and curiosities of childhood while tackling universal truths. His work celebrates the act of questioning and discovery, encouraging viewers to find delight and a deeper connection in the exploration of ‘simple ideas with massive connotations.’
